Paul Gilman & his team have spent the past 10 years researching the cetacean (humpback whales, orcas, and dolphins) responses to music generated by electronic keyboard and Native American flute. Using high definition filming and high quality acoustic investigations, Gilman’s group has gathered more than 100 hours of extraordinary footage of behavioral and auditory interactions. Some of the Nation’s noted cetacean biologists have accompanied Gilman on his expeditions and they have stated their observations of the unique behavior of cetaceans in response to Paul's music.

One expedition involved Orca whales in which there where 4 audio channels devoted to the keyboard, while 4 additional channels were devoted to the hydrophone recording Orca vocalizations. It was clear that Orcas were responding to the musical tones. A keyboard signature was followed by a pause, then an Orca signature, then a pause, then a keyboard signature, followed by an Orca vocalization. This sequence repeated several cycles.

The audience dives underwater through the eye of the cameras, alternating between several divers changing their point of view synced with music.

The music is made of layers of sound frequencies that go above and below the human range of hearing. Strong melodic statements are arranged with room for musical dialogue. When a sound comes in from a sea mammal it is recorded straight to digital leaving room for answers from Paul. This dialogue is built upon with layers of instruments as additional percussion and woodwinds are added. The result is a cohesive texture of sound with soloists from whale to human, dolphin to computer, performer to audience.

Whale sounds are incorporated into a spontaneous composition and crescendos into a wall of sound. This is reminiscent of classical improvisation performed by the great masters of music one hundred years ago. We are witnessing a new ensemble and a new orchestra made of humans and undersea mammals.

It is the blending of ancient whale songs with modern technology and talent that opens a new way of communicating from our hearts to our beloved partners who share three quarters of this planet.
